Mind, body and spirit...Pilates

August 31st 2006 00:55
Pilates Ball
agency: Dreamswork

A sufferer of asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever himself; Joseph Hurbertus Pilates developed a method based on his studies of Zen, Yoga and Ancient Greek and Roman exercise. His determination to overcome the effects of childhood illnesses as well as helping others in the same situation., saw the birth of a method he called, Contrology.

Joseph designed an exercise regime for himself and other patients whilst an internee in WW1. He used a combination of machines specifically formulated to accelerate the rehabilitation process. He even utilized bed springs on matressess to assist those who were bedridden. Today we know that style as, Pilates.

Combining eastern and western philosophies; Pilates is known to improve posture and physical fitness. It is gentle but effective as an exercise. It aligns the body and lengthens the muscles. All you vertically challenged people out there will be pleased to note that many people have gained extra height after doing Pilates, as it decompressess the spinal chord. It is great for people recovering from injury and is often used by physiotherapists in rehabilitaion hospitals.

The main difference between Yoga and Pilates is that the former is more spiratually focussed. Whereas, Pilates (although of benefit mentally and spiritually), concentrates more on physical health and well being.

Athletes also employ Pilates as part of their fitness program; especially dancers who favour the technique for its ability to strengthen the body without adding extra bulk.

Different from other exercise regimes; Pilates engages the core postural muscles (pelvic floor and torso muscles), making it ideal for post pregnant women and people with bladder control problems.

The eight main principles are: Concentration, Relaxation, Coordination, Alignment(precision), Breathing, Centering, Stamina and Isolation.

Those who would most benefit form Pilates:

Pregnant Women

The Elderley

People suffering from illness

People with injuries

Menopausal Women

Post pregnant women

Anyone looking to improve fitness, stamina and muscular strength.

Classes are becoming popular all over the world and are available in most districts. Anyone interested in attending a class, should contact their local council or directory for details.

Walnuts are a great non-animal source of the linoleic acids. These are essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce alone. If these acids are greater in ratio to saturated fats whithin the diet; they can be advantageous in maintaining the body's health across a vast spectrum of areas.

Notable health benefits are:

1. Reduction of bad cholesterol (*results becoming noticable after 4 weeks of adding walnuts to diet), prevention of blood clots. * Average 5 walnuts per day

2. Anti-inflammatory action which has successfully removed the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, and itchy skin conditions in patients.

3. High concentration of nutrients which is ideal for small eaters.

4. Has been known to improve impotence and sexual drive in males. This may be attributed to the zinc content.

[ Growing

Walnut trees are deciduous and can be grown in cold climates. Trees reach a height of 15 metres if allowed to grow with out any restriction. It is essential to grow two varieties to achieve the cross pollination process required to ensue strong and healthy fruit.

Warning: Never eat walnuts that taste bitter as oxidation has started and they may be harmful. Be careful not to overheat walnuts when cooking as this can cause oxidation to occur.

So next time you go shopping, why not add a bag of walnuts. They can be eaten raw or added to salads, stir fries etc. You only need to eat 5 whole walnuts per day to achieve the benefits!!!

Enjoy

Treating chronic pain...Reiki

August 28th 2006 00:28
Developed by a Buddhist in 20th century Japan; Reiki is a technique used to promote healing and reduce stress. It is administered by laying hands over the body and is believed to balance the life force energy that flows within. This is perhaps where the term "Healing Hands" originated from.

The word Reiki is made up of two Chinese characters. Rei, which means higher power and Ki, which represents life force energy.
