Airborne particles such as pollen and dust are notorious for causing allergies this time of the year. Once inhaled, the particles trigger the release of histamine and other compounds that cause inflammation.
The symptoms are distracting and irritating: red, itchy eyes, sneezing and headaches. Some people also suffer from wheezing and rashes and skin irritations.
Whilst we cannot completely stop the particles form existing in the atmosphere; there are natural alternatives available to help ease the discomfort and relive some of the symptoms.
Here are some suggestions that might be of benefit:
Nettle: May help to reduce sneezing and sinus inflammation
Vitamin C: Supports the immune system and the respiratory system in particular. Rich sources are: black currants, citrus fruits, red capsicum and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin C is laso available as a supplement.
Vitamin B (Pantothenic Acid): helps to reduce nasal congestion.
Teas: Anise, ginger, horseradish, and peppermint (singly or combined) all have natural antiseptic properties and act as a natural decongestant.
Flavanoids: such as Quercetin; inhibit the release of histamine. Tomatoes are rich in Quercetin but it is also available as a supplement.
Cold Pressed Honey: Is used as a treatment to desensatize the effects of hay fever.
Onion: may prevent the onset of asthma by relieving bronchial restriction.
Grape seed oil: (topically or ingested): to treat rashes and mild skin irritations.
Other suggestions:
When affected by allergy symptoms; avoid drinking red wine as this increases the production of histamine.
Keep dairy products to a minimum as they increase mucus production.
Drink lost of water to flush out the impurities and keep the liver healthy.
NOTE: If nasal discharge turns yellow or green(signs of an infection) or if wheezing worsens; seek medical advice.
