Ginko Biloba
Ginko Biloba leaves

A plant that has survived the planet for over 200 million years; Ginko biloba might just be what you need to improve your memory and focus.

Ginko biloba contains flavonoids and tepene lactones in its leaves. These particular chemicals are thought to have the same bilogical action in people that they have in the plant.

It's main function is that it protects the body from free radicals (caused by smoking, drinking and poor diet), especially ones that exist in the brain region. It increases metabolism efficiency, regulates neurotransmitters and boosts oxygen levels in the brain.

It also helps to improve circulation by stopping platelets from sticking together in the blood. Enhaned circulation enables the brain to retain information longer by improving reaction time and clarity.

More benefits of Ginko biloba:

- Improved concentration which helps manage symptoms such as: absentmindedness, confusion, depression, tinnitus, anxiety and headaches.

- Controls allergic inflammation, anaphylactic shock and asthma.

- Protects eyes, cardiovascular system amd nervous symptoms against free radicals.

- Prevents the build up of plaque in the arteries.

- Treats some eye and ear disorders.

- Helps to prevent hemorroids and varicose veins.

- Assists with complications from skull injuries and improved cognitive function.

- Helps prevent the rejection of transplanted organs.

- Reverses the aging process.

Side effects: Some people have complained of staomach upset and slight headaches, but this was after taking doses of 120 mg or more. Keep dosage below this amount and consider that the benefits outweigh the possible side effects.

Tablets are made from drying the leaves. Available form most chemist and health food stores.

Glucosamine Sulphate

Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is naturally produced in the body. As people and animals grow older, the body loses the ability to produce enough Glucosamine. This results in hardening of the cartilaged, especially in weight bearing joints such as hips, knees and hands, causing bone spurs and arthritic symptoms. The most common symptoms are; incredible pain and discomfort, limited movement in joints and limping. (see diagram )
Diagram A

Taking Glucosamine supplements is beneficial to humans and animals that suffer from osteoarthritis.

It has shown an improvement in conditions by:

- Rehabilitating cartilage
- Renewing synovial fluid
- Repairing joints theat have been damaged by osteoarthritis
- Slowing the deterioration of cartlidge damage
- Easing articular and joint pain
- Improving mobility

Glucosamine is usually derived from shellfish, so those who have an allergic reation to this food; should avoid taking Glucosamine unless they can aascertain the exact source of the product. There are some sources that come from fermented corn, but there is speculation as to wether it effects the production of insulin in the body; making it unsuitable for some diabetic sufferers.

Except for the above disorders; Glucosamine has not displayed any recordable side effects to those who have taken it.

If you are taking other medications it is important to check with your health care proffessional. This is to ensure that the supplements do not interfere with your existing medical regime.

If you are interested in taking Glucosamine; studies have shown a better result in patients who took the product in liquid form as opposed to the capsules or salts. When buying the supplements, make sure that it comes from a reputable manufacturer.

If you do suffer from osteoarthritis. Why not give Glucopsamine a go. It might be just what you need to get mobile and feeling like a 21 year old again!!!

The name 'Horny Goat Weed', originated from a story 100's of years ago in China. A goat herder noticed an increase in promiscuity amongst his goats. After studying them for a while; he saw that the increase was only apparent after the goats ate certain types of weeds. In the villages, word got around and Chinese practitioners began prescribing the weeds to treat humans.

Horny Goat weed (or Ying Yang Huo as the Chinese call it), has been used to treat kidney, liver, joint and back disorders and with its testosterone like effects; as an aphrodisiac.
