September 14th 2006 00:34
Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is naturally produced in the body. As people and animals grow older, the body loses the ability to produce enough Glucosamine. This results in hardening of the cartilaged, especially in weight bearing joints such as hips, knees and hands, causing bone spurs and arthritic symptoms. The most common symptoms are; incredible pain and discomfort, limited movement in joints and limping. (see diagram )
Taking Glucosamine supplements is beneficial to humans and animals that suffer from osteoarthritis.
It has shown an improvement in conditions by:
- Rehabilitating cartilage
- Renewing synovial fluid
- Repairing joints theat have been damaged by osteoarthritis
- Slowing the deterioration of cartlidge damage
- Easing articular and joint pain
- Improving mobility
Glucosamine is usually derived from shellfish, so those who have an allergic reation to this food; should avoid taking Glucosamine unless they can aascertain the exact source of the product. There are some sources that come from fermented corn, but there is speculation as to wether it effects the production of insulin in the body; making it unsuitable for some diabetic sufferers.
Except for the above disorders; Glucosamine has not displayed any recordable side effects to those who have taken it.
If you are taking other medications it is important to check with your health care proffessional. This is to ensure that the supplements do not interfere with your existing medical regime.
If you are interested in taking Glucosamine; studies have shown a better result in patients who took the product in liquid form as opposed to the capsules or salts. When buying the supplements, make sure that it comes from a reputable manufacturer.
If you do suffer from osteoarthritis. Why not give Glucopsamine a go. It might be just what you need to get mobile and feeling like a 21 year old again!!!
