Tell me more about...Hypnotherapy

October 31st 2006 23:51
Hypnosis originated from Greece
Hypnosis is an art that induces the patient into a trance like state of compliance and heightened susceptibility.

Contrary to popular beleif; almost anyone can be hypnotized, in fact the higher the intelligence level the better the result. Even sceptics can be hypnotized although it is much harder to achieve.

The art of hypnotherapy is believed to have originated form Greece where it was used to treat patients sufferinig from anxiety and hysteria.

Hypnosis is used for many different applications, from the more public displays used for entertainment purposes; to the clinical scenario to treat specific conditions.

To acheive the hypnotic state in a patient; the hypnotist speaks in a slow, montone controlled voice and the room is usually darkened to create a tranquil atmosphere. Some hypnotists get their patients to focus on a moving object or a revolving wheel.

Under hypnosis, the patient travels through various levels of conciousness; similar to that of sleep. The hypnotist is then able to apply the therapy to best suit the condition they are treating. On waking the patient is almost always aware of what has transpired during that session.

Hypnotherapy has proven successful in treating conditions such as depression, post traumatic stress, anxiety, nervous disorders and OCD. It is particularly helpful for those trying to give up a bad habit such as smoking, excessive drinking and with regaining control of weight and eating disorders.

When selecting a hypnotherapist to assist with a specific disorder; opt for one that is medically trained as they will have a better understanding of the condition they are treating you for.
