Mind, body and spirit...Karate
September 21st 2006 04:02
Karate is a martial art style that originates from Japan. The word translates in English to mean 'empty hand'. It is a style that requires dedication and complete focus from the mind, body and spirit in order to achieve the full benefits.
There are many styles of karate and the Kyokoshun style is said to be the strongest. This style was developed by the late Sosai Masutatsu Oyama, who was known for his great spiritual and mental strength. He spent many months on the Minobu Mountain, Japan in complete seclusion whilst embarking on a rigorous training regime. He is also remembered for his success in fighting and ripping the horns off 52 bulls with his bare hands.
He brought forward the introduction of the 100 man Kumite (fight) which is the ultimate test and demonstration of self-discipline, strength and enduerance; mentally, physically and spiritually.
It involves a series of 100 x 2 minute rounds in which one student must defeat and knockdown one hundred opponents in one day. Masutatsu Oyama successfully completed this challenge when he fought over 300 opponents in three days. He wanted to continue on the forth day, but there were no opponents left!!!
Only 13 other people have successfully completed the 100 man kunite fromm start to finish, one of then a women.
Although most of us will never get to the stage of competing in the 100 man kumite, those who practise karate will enjoy all round benefits of a holistic nature.
Physical Health - healthy heart rate, improved fitness, weight loss, muscle tone, stamina, coordination and balance, it stretches muscles and excercises internal organs.
Mental Health - Focus, patience and concentration, euphoria, mood control.
Spiritually - self-discipline, self-satisfaction, confidence, ability to use mind over matter, tolerance of pain and stressful situations.
Classes are held in most suburbs. If you are interested; go along to a few different classes and watch them train, That way you can find a style that suits you best. The bonus with this style is that you learn to defend yourself which in this day and age is probably not a bad thing!!!!
