Vitamins are chemically organic substances that contain carbon.
They are needed by the body in order for it to regulate metabolic functions within the cells and biochemical processes to release energy in food. Some vitamins are also antioxidants. This means that they protect the tissues from cell damage and help to prevent disease.
The only vitamins that the body is able to manufacture by itself are vitamins D and K. The other source is from ingestion.
Vitamins are divided into two main catergories; Fat soluble - A, D, E and K and water soluble - C and B (ten types)
The fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body for long periods at a time whereas the water soluble ones (except for B12), need to be replenished on a regular basis.
Minerals only make up 4 % of our body weight but are an essential source for the body in order for it to function properly and also to help to prevent the onset of various diseases and disorders.
Unless your diet consists of a balanced supply of the five food groups, that have been obtained from organic sources and are free from pesticides; chances are you are probably not receiving all the vitamins and minerals that your body requires to operate effectively.
Stress, alcohol and caffiene can cause levels of B vitamins to drop. A diet without a variety of coloured vegetables in it is probably lacking in vital antioxidants that are paramount to the immune system to fight off and prevent disease.
For complete body insurance; you may consider the option of taking a multi vitamin supplement in conjunction with a balanced diet. there are many brands available and if you are unsure do some research and read up on them before making a decision. If possible, buy from a health food shop that has a naturopath on hand that can give you nutritional advice that will suit your lifestyle.
