Pistachio Nuts

Pistachio nuts are a great energy source and for such a small morsel; contain a rich quantity of vitamins and minerals. Unlike other nuts; they have a relatively low calorie content in comparison and are very high in fibre. This makes makes them a great nut alternative for those watching their weight. Recommended amount: 30 nuts, no more than 4 times a week.


Pistachio Nuts contain the following Vitamins

A: (assists eyesight and stimulates tissue growth)

B-1: (converts energy from carbohydrates)

B-6: (produces insulin, hemoglobin and antibodies)

E: (antioxidant)

Minerals

Calcium: (nerve function, strengthens teeth & bones)

Copper: (produces energies and makes hemoglobin)

Folate: (cell formation & renewal, prevents birth defects, reduces cardiovascular disease)

Iron: (Transports oxygen, needed for red blood cells)

Magnesium: (contributes to enzymes that control body functions, reduces colic and stomach cramps, bone health)

Phospherus: (enables effective use of carbs, fat & protein)

Potassium: (sustains electrolyte balance, provides endurance for excercise)

Selenium: (antioxidant, cell growth)

Zinc: (sexual health, heald wounds)

Interesting facts about Pistachios


1. There is more fibre in a serving (30 nuts) than 1/2 cup spinach.

2. There is more B-1(thiamin) than 1/2 cup cooked rice.

3. The B-6 content is higher than peanut butter and black beans.

4. Pistachios have more potassium than 1/2 a large banana.

5. They contain plant nutrients that may decrease the risk of developing cancer.

Growing

The tree is deciduous and small compared to other nut trees, reaching a maximum height of 6 metres.

Climate: Temperate to dry summers and cold winters.

The nut is contained within a shell that is 2 cm long and splits when it is ripe. The kernel is smooth in texture and green in colour.
