October 18th 2006 00:00
Rice bran oil is extracted from the bran of brown rice. It is very popular in Asia, but is only recently become available on supermaket shelves in Australia.
It is high in Vitamin E and contains antioxidants (at least five) that help to fight free radicals and enhace the immune system. It contains a supply of fatty acids which assist in lowering bad cholesterol levels (LDL and trglycerides) and helps to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Studies of RBO on rats have shown that it may potentially be an anti-cancer and anti-infection agent in humans.
One of the assets of RBO is that it has a very high smoking point. This means that it can be heated to a very high temperature (ideal for deep frying), without destrying the nutritional values of the oil.
It also has less binding agents so that less oil is absorbed by the food that being cooked. Due to its low viscosity; less calories are absorbed by the body during comsumption. This also makes it easier to clean up.
RBO has a much longer shelf life than other oils whcih lowers the possibility of it going rancid and causing illness.
In Japan; RBO is traditionally used by women as a skin rub. The benefits gained are: smoother skin and less chance of melatonin developing (this is probably due to its high oryzanol content).
RBO is also great for adding shine to the coat of dogs and horses by mixing a small amount with feed.
When buying, check the label to ensure that no shortenings or hydronated oils such as Trans fats are contained.
Use as a salad dressing or for frying or baking.
