Foods that heal...Seaweed
October 10th 2006 00:24
Due to the introduction of Sushi bars and Japanese cuisine to our culture; seaweed is now becoming more prevalent in our diet.
There are many different types of seaweed available: arame, nori, kombu, hijiki and wakame.
Seaweed has many beneficial attributes that can be gained from eating it.
It is high in iodine which assists sufferers of an underactive thyroid gland. An underactive thyroid gland causes symptoms such as; weight gain, tiredness, forgetfulness, goitre and less brain development in infants.
Iodine is lacking in the soil of many areas worldwide which makes eating seaweed a good alternative. It is also believed that iodine may be proactive in the treatment of breast cancer. Studies have shown a considerable reduction in the tumour size of patients that consumed iodine in comparison to those who didn't.
Seaweed is also rich in vitamin B12 as well as being one of the only plant sources to contain it.
