September 20th 2006 00:05
St.John's Wort
St. Johns's Wort Flower

Dating back as far as St. John of Jerusalem who was said to have used it as a lotion to soothe battle wounds. St. John's Wort has been found to be a beneficial herb indeed, with a range of healing and therapeutic benefits.

The most common modern day use is as a natural anti-depressant. It works by inhibiting the re-uptake of serotonin in the brain in the same way that the pharmaceutical medications like Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil do. But with less side effects.

The active ingredient, hypercin also has other healing benefits such as:

Treating PMS symptoms

Treats chronic fatigue and mental burnout

Controls viral infections

Reduces tumor growth, malignant and benign

Treats worms, bladder conditions, dysentry and nervous depression

Dissolves boils

Excellent blood cleaser and purifier

Treats bronchitis by removing obstructions in the lungs(phlegm)

Treats internal bleeding

Treats chronic uterine problems and painful and irregular periods

Contains an alkoloid that stimulates the heart and arteries

Aids in speeding up the healing process in wounds and bruising.

Antibacterial properties

Assists in appetite control in those trying to lose weight.

St.Johns Wort can be taken internally or topically, depending on the condition that it is being used for.

It is important to note that it is used in the treatment of mild depression and any conditions that are of a more serious nature, should be monitored by a professional.

Side effects: The main side effect associated with St. John's Wort is increased photosensitivity (Allergic reaction to sunlight). The exposure in those affected can cause tissue damage and in rare cases, more serious reactions. To avoid this; it is recommended that you avoid exposure to strong sunlight, particuarly if you have fair skin.

Note: You must not take St.John's Wort if you are already taking anti-depressants as you may risk the possibility of an overdose occuring. If you are unsue, discuss it with your health care proffessional first.
