Mind, body and spirit...The Alexander Technique

Bad Posture - PHOTO: Goldstein
A reciter of poetry, Tasmanian F.Mattias Alexander, noticed that he was constantly losing his voice. As a result he decided to take more interest in his body by concentrating on movement and balance. As he recited his lines, he stood in front of a mirror and became

aware that he was using his body wrong, by pulling his head back and tightening his throat.

He started to relax his body and restrained from moving unecessarily whilst practicing. Very soon, he began to see an incredible improvement in his ability to perform. He also noticed that he was no longer losing his voice.

He trained himself to breathe, hold his body better and paid a lot more attention to his posture. As a result he began to feel healthier and more confident.

Alexander, shared his discovery with other performers and began to encourage and instruct them to do what he found valuable in improving his own health. The results began to speak for themselves.
bad/good posture

Alexander saw how badly people's postures were and devised a system to discourage them from using habitual and harmful movements in their everyday lives. The most common mistakes were made in the transition from sitting to standing or lying to standing , aspeople often threw their heads back in the process.

The Alexander Technique, is not a treatment that someone does to someone else. It si more a self re-education process that encourages prople to use their bodies more effectively and to discourage injury or complications occuring in the future.

The patient is taught to rediscover their basic natural posture and movement patterns, by freeing their body of learnt ones. As the patient adopts the improved methods, they feel strange at first. But after regualr practise ( 1 year for full benefits), the body and mind begin to reorganize and the results are feeling better mentally and improved health physically.

Some people might comment that the system is just common sense, and it is!
The problem is that most people are not even aware of the damage they are doing to their bodies when they sluggishly rise from bed or slump down on a chair in front of the computer. But if you can make a conscious effort to correct your posture throughout the day. After a while it will just come naturally and your body will thank you for it!!!

I have a problem not too dissimalar to that, I kind of hunch forward with my head.

When I fix my posture it feels awkward, like I'm trying to push my head behind my back..

That is a common complaint from people who have habitually bad posture(which is most of us) The best way to fix it is to persevere with correcting your posture. It will feel strange at first, but as your muscles re-learn the correct way, they will become used to it and eventually, you will be feeling much better.

I know, I try and tell myself that, but I feel awkward and think I might be pressing my stomach out too much or somehting and start getting ideas about what other people are thinking of me walking like that...

Just practise whenever you are at home alone. That way when you do go out, you will not even be aware that you are doing it.
