Foods that heal...Walnuts
August 29th 2006 00:00
Walnuts are a great non-animal source of the linoleic acids. These are essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce alone. If these acids are greater in ratio to saturated fats whithin the diet; they can be advantageous in maintaining the body's health across a vast spectrum of areas.
Notable health benefits are:
1. Reduction of bad cholesterol (*results becoming noticable after 4 weeks of adding walnuts to diet), prevention of blood clots. * Average 5 walnuts per day
2. Anti-inflammatory action which has successfully removed the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, and itchy skin conditions in patients.
3. High concentration of nutrients which is ideal for small eaters.
4. Has been known to improve impotence and sexual drive in males. This may be attributed to the zinc content.
[ Growing
Walnut trees are deciduous and can be grown in cold climates. Trees reach a height of 15 metres if allowed to grow with out any restriction. It is essential to grow two varieties to achieve the cross pollination process required to ensue strong and healthy fruit.
Warning: Never eat walnuts that taste bitter as oxidation has started and they may be harmful. Be careful not to overheat walnuts when cooking as this can cause oxidation to occur.
So next time you go shopping, why not add a bag of walnuts. They can be eaten raw or added to salads, stir fries etc. You only need to eat 5 whole walnuts per day to achieve the benefits!!!
Enjoy
