Foods that heal...Yoghurt

October 25th 2006 00:00
Natural yoghurt has many healing benefits

Yoghurt is known for its high nutritional value. It is a great source of calcium which helps to improve bone strength and density as well as containing a good source of B vitamins needed for energy and cell growth.

But the healing benefits of yoghurt come from its content of live bacteria. Only yoghurt containing the culture Lactobacillus acidophilus has therapeutic benefits.

Eating live bacteria reduces the vulnerability to gastroenteritis and vaginal thrush. It also counters common bacterium that causes food poisoning, urinary tract infections and peptic ulcers.

The bacteria in yoghurt help to restore gut microflora in the intestines which is often destroyed by antibiotics. Micro flora is responsible for fighting against infection and diarrhea. In fact people who suffer from diarrhea recover much more quickly if they eat yoghurt containing live bacteria then those who don't.

Live bacteria also stimulates the body cells that fight harmful bacteria and the output of gamma-interferon which is the body's antiviral defense.

In order to maximize on the benefits of yoghurt; it must be eaten daily. This is because the live bacteria cannot survive in the gut for very long and constantl;y needs replenishing.

At the first signs of stomach upset or the onset of a viral infection; start eating yoghurt(225ml) on a daily basis to counteract the symptoms and stop the progression of the infection.

For people who are lactose intolerant try eating sheep's yoghurt as although it contains lactose; it is much easier to digest.

Remember to check the fat content on the nutritional label as some types of yoghurt such as Greek yoghurt can be high in saturated fat.

Enjoy as a healthy alternative to sour cream in soups, with nachos etc.[/
